Long before Martha’s Vineyard
became known as a community of fine estates for the prominent
families of the
northeastern United States, a small place along the coast of Maine
known as Mount Desert Island was the summer residence of choice
for many of the most influential names in American history.
Beginning in the 1880’s the Rockefellers, Astors, Carnegies,
Fords, Morgans, and Vanderbilts all became part time residents of
Mount Desert Island. They commissioned the country’s most prominent
master builders to construct their summer estates and cottages throughout
the island.
In 1947 a fire devastated most of Mount Desert Island, destroying
many of the incredible structures. Some owners chose to rebuild,
others left, but still today one thing remains, their legacies. Mount
Desert Island is today known as Acadia National Park.
In 2004, Acadia Housewrights was created
for the purpose of providing homeowners with a level of residential
construction
service not often
found in today’s mass produced world.
